Howie Long Facts

Long was exceptionally versatile as a player, having played all 5 defensive line positions. This coupled with his size, strength, and agility, made him an incredible sportsman.

He was selected to play in 8 Pro Bowls and 5 All-Pro teams.

Howie is friends with the sports star, Terry Bradshaw.

He was included in the “NFL 1980s All-Decade Team” alongside Reggie White.

In 1985, he was awarded the George S. Halas Trophy by the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) for being the “NFL Defensive Player of the Year.”

He dedicated his whole career to the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders and played in the NFL for 13 seasons from 1981 to 1993, having jersey number 75.

Howie won the Sports Emmy Award for “Outstanding Studio Analyst” in 1997 and got nominations in the same category for 10 consecutive years (1997-2006).

He rounded off his outstanding career with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2000.

After his retirement as a football player, Long explored acting and broadcasting and started working as a studio analyst for Fox Sports‘ coverage on NFL.

He had appeared in a canceled scene from the theatrical release of the 1996 American musical comedy film, That Thing You Do! but could be seen in the director’s cut version.

He has appeared in films like In’N Out (1984), Broken Arrow (1996), Firestorm (1998), Dollar for the Dead (1998) and 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001).

When doing movies, Long was noted for using a popular stock sound effect in the film Broken Arrow, which came to be known as the “Howie scream”.

Long also made several cameo appearances on various television shows and commercials.
