Gilbert Hartmann LaPiere was born on 29 June 1923, in Irvington, Essex County, New Jersey, USA. His parents are Albert J LaPiere and Tillie Hartman LaPiere. He went to grade school and high school in Newark, New Jersey. In grade school, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was active in sports and concentrated on track and baseball during his school years.

Gilbert Hartmann LaPiere became a student of the University Of Missouri School Of Mines at Rolla, Missouri, and then graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member and past president of the Sigma Pi fraternity. While in college, his education was interrupted for two-and-a-half years by World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps.

Gilbert Hartmann LaPiere became a bombardier on B-24s in the Western Pacific arena, accumulating thirty-five missions and surviving “ditching” his airplane into the ocean after a bombing mission, per a source.
