Susie Hariet (2009–Present) – Dan first met his wife Susie Hariet in 2006 in Sheffield, while the two were working in separate theater productions. Dan was a part of The Romans in Britain and Susie, who is a Jazz vocalist, was a part of a musical. They ran into each other after their show and started hanging out together. Dan revealed that their connection was instant. Dan’s New York move was not only motivated by pursuing diversity in work projects but also his health. Owing to the stability of a recurring role in Downtown Abbey, Dan took his health for granted.
Taking note of criticism of his increasing weight by fans on Twitter, Dan started training seriously to regain his fitness.
He admitted that while in London, he could get away with hiding his body under layers of tweed to cover the fat gained by drinking too much beer.
Now in New York, he follows an intense exercise regime that comprises of swimming, yoga and lifting weights at the gym. His physical transformation was radical and hard to miss.
He lost 30 pounds for the Liam Neeson starrer A Walk among the Tombstones (2014) but gained half that weight in muscle for The Guest (2014) by lifting weights and practicing martial arts.

He was adopted when he was 7 days old and was brought up in Brecon, Wales and South-East England.

Dan is unaware of the identity of his biological parents and has never tried to trace them out due to a sense of loyalty to his adoptive parents.

He was hyperactive and restless as a child in school. Participation in a school play deemed as a punishment unexpectedly became a source of emotional release for him.

Other than English, he also speaks French and German.

While studying in Tonbridge, Dan often felt suffocated by the strict environment of his school. He rebelled by smoking openly and participating in demonstrations. This often got him suspended. His drama teacher, Lawrence Thornbury and English teacher, Jonathan Smith took him under their wing and helped him manage his emotions by encouraging a deeper interest in Literature.
